Densely faceted for a 6mm round, this 1.04ct colorless topaz breaks the light into many small bright wedges rather than a few broad planes, which gives it a busy scatter against the black ground of the photograph. The material is completely transparent with no tint and the crown is evenly cut all the way round. A faint softness sits right at the center where the pavilion facets converge. Clarity is VVS.
Finer faceting costs more cutting time and shows up as more individual flashes, which is worth looking for in a white stone where there is no body color to do the work. This is untreated topaz from Brazil, colorless without any help. A 6mm round takes any stock head and serves as a solitaire or a halo center. Topaz is November's birthstone.
Natural white topaz, 1.04ct round, sold loose.

About topaz
Topaz is 8 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratches well, but it has perfect cleavage along one plane, and a sharp knock can split it even when the surface shows no scratches. It suits pendants and earrings, and rings too if worn with care.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can start a crack along its cleavage.
Wear and storage
Take it off for sport, gardening or heavy work: a sharp knock can split it. Harder stones such as sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This topaz is untreated. Topaz should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Ask for gentle pressure when setting, since a hard push can split it.
