Wider and rounder in the shoulders than the rest of the group, this 1.55ct pear measures 8.7x6mm and reads as a fuller, softer teardrop rather than a sharp taper. The extra width spreads the light across a broader crown, which makes the stone look larger face-up than the carat weight suggests. A small dark point sits low on the left side, in line with the VVS grade. The colorless material is bright and fully transparent.
A rounder pear sits more comfortably in a claw setting than a narrow one, since there is more shoulder for the metal to grip and less exposed tip. Untreated Brazilian topaz, colorless in its natural state. Colorless stones like this pair with any metal and any other gem, which is what keeps them useful. November claims topaz as its birthstone.
Natural white topaz, wide pear cut, sold loose.

About topaz
Topaz is 8 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratches well, but it has perfect cleavage along one plane, and a sharp knock can split it even when the surface shows no scratches. It suits pendants and earrings, and rings too if worn with care.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can start a crack along its cleavage.
Wear and storage
Take it off for sport, gardening or heavy work: a sharp knock can split it. Harder stones such as sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This topaz is untreated. Topaz should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Ask for gentle pressure when setting, since a hard push can split it.
