The softest of the white topaz cushions, this 1.56ct stone carries a milky quality through the middle of the crown with fine surface scuffing across the table, so light spreads instead of flashing. Around the edges the facets stay bright and the outline is a clean rounded cushion. The material itself is colorless and transparent. VVS clarity, with the diffuse look coming from the surface rather than from anything inside.
Surface character of this kind is not structural, and topaz is hard enough that a polish holds up well in wear. This is untreated Brazilian topaz, colorless as found. The smallest of the 7mm cushions offered here, it suits a pendant or a narrower finger size. Topaz is the stone for November birthdays.

About topaz
Topaz is 8 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratches well, but it has perfect cleavage along one plane, and a sharp knock can split it even when the surface shows no scratches. It suits pendants and earrings, and rings too if worn with care.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can start a crack along its cleavage.
Wear and storage
Take it off for sport, gardening or heavy work: a sharp knock can split it. Harder stones such as sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.

This topaz is untreated. Topaz should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Ask for gentle pressure when setting, since a hard push can split it.
