Crisp is the word for this 1.59ct pear: the chevron facets down the length are sharply drawn, the junctions between them are clean, and the light comes back in a well-organized pattern rather than a scatter. At 8.9x6mm the outline is balanced, neither too narrow nor too round. The colorless material is bright and completely clear, with nothing visible inside at VVS. The point and shoulders are evenly cut.
Cutting quality shows more plainly in colorless stones than in colored ones, because there is no body color to carry a mediocre pattern. Untreated Brazilian topaz is the material here. A pear of this size and proportion works equally as a pendant drop or set point-up in a ring. November has topaz for its birthstone.
Natural white topaz, 8.9x6mm pear, sold loose.

About topaz
Topaz is 8 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratches well, but it has perfect cleavage along one plane, and a sharp knock can split it even when the surface shows no scratches. It suits pendants and earrings, and rings too if worn with care.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can start a crack along its cleavage.
Wear and storage
Take it off for sport, gardening or heavy work: a sharp knock can split it. Harder stones such as sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This topaz is untreated. Topaz should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Ask for gentle pressure when setting, since a hard push can split it.
