Gentler through the middle than its neighbours, this 1.68ct cushion lets light diffuse into a soft grey-white across the center while the outer crown stays bright and sharply cut. Fine polishing marks show on the table under raking light. The stone is colorless with no tint at all and the cushion outline is even from corner to corner. VVS clarity, with the interior free of anything eye-visible.
A diffuse center is a function of how deep the pavilion sits beneath the table and is normal in antique-style cutting. The cushion is cut from untreated Brazilian topaz. Around 7mm the stone works well in a bezel, which frames the outline and plays to the softer light rather than against it. Topaz is the birthstone for November.

About topaz
Topaz is 8 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratches well, but it has perfect cleavage along one plane, and a sharp knock can split it even when the surface shows no scratches. It suits pendants and earrings, and rings too if worn with care.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can start a crack along its cleavage.
Wear and storage
Take it off for sport, gardening or heavy work: a sharp knock can split it. Harder stones such as sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.

This topaz is untreated. Topaz should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Ask for gentle pressure when setting, since a hard push can split it.
