A small bright glint sits on the left girdle of this 1.69ct cushion, where a shallow nick catches the light head-on; in a claw or bezel setting that stretch of the girdle is covered. Elsewhere the stone is crisp and lively, with clean facet junctions and strong white flashes across a well-proportioned cushion outline. The material is colorless and transparent throughout. Clarity is VVS.
Girdle nicks arise in cutting and handling and are the most common minor feature on commercial faceted stones; they matter for appearance only when they land somewhere a setting cannot reach, and this one does not. Brazilian topaz arrives colorless without treatment, and this stone has had none. At 7mm it is a practical ring size, and a claw setting is the natural choice here. Topaz belongs to November.

About topaz
Topaz is 8 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratches well, but it has perfect cleavage along one plane, and a sharp knock can split it even when the surface shows no scratches. It suits pendants and earrings, and rings too if worn with care.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can start a crack along its cleavage.
Wear and storage
Take it off for sport, gardening or heavy work: a sharp knock can split it. Harder stones such as sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.

This topaz is untreated. Topaz should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Ask for gentle pressure when setting, since a hard push can split it.
