Colorless pear-shaped topaz at 5x3.3mm, sold by the stone. The photograph shows four of them together so the cut and the clarity can be judged side by side; they are consistent in outline, brightly polished and fully transparent with no body color at all. The faceting is a standard pear brilliant with the point cleanly finished and the shoulders evenly rounded. Clarity is VS.
Small pears in a calibrated size are bought for drops, for the ends of a line, or in matched pairs for earrings, which is why they are priced individually rather than as a parcel. The topaz is untreated Brazilian material. At 5x3.3mm the stone takes a standard pear head with a V-claw over the point. November has topaz for its birthstone.
Natural white topaz pear, priced per stone.

About topaz
Topaz is 8 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratches well, but it has perfect cleavage along one plane, and a sharp knock can split it even when the surface shows no scratches. It suits pendants and earrings, and rings too if worn with care.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can start a crack along its cleavage.
Wear and storage
Take it off for sport, gardening or heavy work: a sharp knock can split it. Harder stones such as sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This topaz is untreated. Topaz should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Ask for gentle pressure when setting, since a hard push can split it.
