An octagon step cut at 7x5mm, colorless with the faintest cool cast, sold by the stone from a small matched group. The wide open table and parallel steps give a clean, glassy look, and light comes back in broad rectangles rather than as scattered sparkle. Corners are neatly clipped and the girdle runs even all the way round. Clarity is VS, and an open cut like this makes the interior easy to check, with nothing distracting present.
Step cuts are unforgiving in colored stones but flattering in colorless material, where clarity is the thing on show. This is untreated Brazilian topaz, sold exactly as it was cut. At 7x5mm it fits standard rectangular settings and works well as a side stone flanking a larger colored center, and buying singly makes it practical to match a pair. Topaz is November's stone.

About topaz
Topaz is 8 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratches well, but it has perfect cleavage along one plane, and a sharp knock can split it even when the surface shows no scratches. It suits pendants and earrings, and rings too if worn with care.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can start a crack along its cleavage.
Wear and storage
Take it off for sport, gardening or heavy work: a sharp knock can split it. Harder stones such as sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This topaz is untreated. Topaz should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Ask for gentle pressure when setting, since a hard push can split it.
