5 Pieces Natural Larimar 8.85ct 7mm Round Cabochon

Five round cabochons with a cool, distinctly marbled look. The deepest is a teal-green threaded with white feathering, carrying a tiny black dendritic inclusion near the top edge. Another shows blue bands running in near-parallel lines across a white center, an unusually orderly pattern for larimar. A third is pale aqua whose lower half turns milky white, with a fine net of white veins over the rest, and the fourth is a soft green-white with grey-green mottling. The fifth is a gentle aqua-blue carrying one broad white swirl. The polish is glossy across all five.

The white in larimar is pectolite that never took up copper, so the blue and the white are the same mineral in the same stone, laid down in the radiating fibrous growth that gives the material its wave-like figure. It occurs only in Barahona Province in the Dominican Republic, in cavities within volcanic rock. These are natural and untreated. At 5 to 6 on the Mohs scale, larimar is a good candidate for pendants, drop earrings and bezel work. Strongly patterned stones like these sit well in simple silver settings that leave the figure visible.
