A set of five round larimar cabochons that leans towards the deeper end of the color scale. The strongest is a saturated turquoise-blue with a pale grey-white patch worked into one side, and next to it sits a calm, evenly toned pale blue with very little patterning at all. Another is green, a soft sage tone with a pale blue crescent curving through the middle of the dome, and one more shows blue-green with a scattering of small black mineral inclusions along its lower edge. The fifth is pale aqua with milky white swirls. All five are cut as high domes with a smooth, glassy polish.
Larimar was named in 1974, when Dominican Miguel Mendez combined his daughter's name, Larissa, with mar, the Spanish word for sea. The material forms in cavities in volcanic rock in Barahona Province and was first collected as water-worn pebbles washed down to the coast. Pectolite itself is a common mineral worldwide, but the copper-bearing blue variety is confined to this one part of the Dominican Republic. These cabochons are untreated. With a hardness of 5 to 6 on the Mohs scale, larimar suits pendants, earrings and bezel-set rings worn with a little care. Five matched 7mm rounds are enough for a pair of studs and a small pendant from one set.

About larimar
Larimar is a blue variety of the mineral pectolite, found only in the Dominican Republic. At 4.5 to 5 on the Mohs scale it is soft, so it suits pendants and earrings better than rings.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft brush, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: larimar is soft and sensitive to heat.
Wear and storage
Below 7 on the Mohs scale, it can be scratched even by household dust, which contains quartz. It suits pendants, earrings and brooches better than rings worn every day. Store it on its own in a soft pouch, away from harder stones.
For your jeweler
These stones are untreated. Larimar should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. A bezel or another protective setting suits it best.
