This set of five round tanzanites spans a full range of tone, from a pale, slightly grayish lavender-blue on the far left through progressively richer stones toward the right, ending in a deep, saturated blue-violet. One stone shows a small natural inclusion near its edge, while the rest read clean and bright.
All five were mined at the Merelani Hills of Tanzania, the only known source of tanzanite in the world, and have received the standard heat treatment used throughout the trade. The gradual color range makes this set fun to work with for graduated designs, or simply to enjoy the natural diversity within a single tanzanite parcel.

About tanzanite
Tanzanite is the blue to violet variety of the mineral zoisite. At 6 to 7 on the Mohs scale, with perfect cleavage and fair toughness, it is softer and more fragile than sapphire, so it needs gentle handling.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can start a crack along its cleavage.
Wear and storage
Take it off for sport, gardening or heavy work: a sharp knock can split it. With a hardness below 7 it can be scratched even by quartz, which is found in household dust, so wipe it gently and store it on its own in a soft pouch. It suits pendants and earrings better than an everyday ring.
For your jeweler
These stones are heated, and the color from heating is stable. Tanzanite should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Ask for gentle pressure when setting, since a hard push can split it.
