The green leans slightly toward yellow-green, sitting in the bright, spring-green range rather than a deeper forest or teal tone. One sphere in the group shows a rainbow iridescent patch where the light hits the coating at a direct angle, giving a glimpse of the thin-film optical character of the treatment. Aura quartz is natural quartz that has been color-treated through vacuum vapor deposition, a process in which metal atoms are bonded to the crystal surface under high temperature and low pressure. The soft apple-green color of this variety is produced by the deposition of copper onto the quartz surface; copper, when applied as an ultra-thin bonded film, creates the characteristic green to teal-green tones through optical interference effects at the coating layer. Being a surface treatment rather than a body-color change, the coating can be scratched or gradually worn by abrasion, so these spheres are best kept on a display stand and away from hard or rough surfaces to preserve the finish long-term.
