The surface has a smooth, glossy finish with a gentle metallic shimmer where the light catches the coating directly. Aura quartz is natural quartz that has been color-treated through vacuum vapor deposition, a process in which metal atoms are bonded to the crystal surface under high temperature and low pressure. The pale rose-pink tone of this variety is produced by the bonding of platinum, sometimes combined with silver, to the quartz surface; it is platinum that creates the soft metallic pink through thin-film optical effects. Being a surface treatment rather than a body-color change, the coating can be scratched or gradually worn by abrasion, so these spheres are best kept on a display stand and away from hard or rough surfaces to preserve the finish long-term.
