Aura quartz is natural quartz that has been color-treated through vacuum vapor deposition, a process in which metal atoms are bonded to the crystal surface under high temperature and low pressure. The deep magenta-pink color of this variety is produced by the bonding of platinum, sometimes combined with silver, to the quartz surface; it is platinum that creates the characteristic rosy-metallic hue through thin-film optical interference. Being a surface treatment rather than a body-color change, the coating can be scratched or gradually worn by abrasion, so these spheres are best kept on a display stand and away from hard or rough surfaces to preserve the finish long-term.
