A greyer cast separates this 0.96ct round from the clearer stones in the group, the pale blue reading cooler and slightly flatter with softer contrast between the star and the facets around it. A tiny dark point sits above center, visible only under close light and in line with VS. The 6mm outline is accurately cut and the girdle runs even. The interior is otherwise clear.
Grey-leaning stones look their best against white gold, platinum or silver, where the metal reinforces the coolness instead of fighting it; yellow gold tends to make them look washed. Brazilian topaz reaches its blue through irradiation followed by heating. Six millimetres is the workhorse size for pendants and small rings. Blue topaz is a December birthstone.
Natural light blue topaz, 0.96ct round, sold loose.

About topaz
Topaz is 8 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratches well, but it has perfect cleavage along one plane, and a sharp knock can split it even when the surface shows no scratches. It suits pendants and earrings, and rings too if worn with care.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can start a crack along its cleavage.
Wear and storage
Take it off for sport, gardening or heavy work: a sharp knock can split it. Harder stones such as sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This topaz is irradiated, the usual treatment for this color. Topaz should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Ask for gentle pressure when setting, since a hard push can split it.
