A small oval pink ruby from Madagascar in a deeper wine-pink, carrying more weight of color than the paler stones at this size. A distinct cluster of dark green-black mineral specks runs along the upper right edge, the clearest natural marker on the stone, and a broad polished facet sits below it on the right flank. The rest of the body is even and quietly saturated.
Mineral specks like these are trapped during crystal growth and are a routine feature of Madagascar corundum at commercial clarity. Heat is a standard, accepted treatment for ruby. Corundum's hardness of 9 makes it durable enough for daily wear, and at 0.28ct and 2.8-3x2.3mm this small oval works as an accent stone where a deeper pink carries the design. Ruby is the July birthstone.
Natural Madagascar pink ruby, July birthstone, sold loose.

About ruby
Ruby is the red variety of the mineral corundum. At 9 on the Mohs scale it is second only to diamond, and it is also very tough with no cleavage, so it rarely chips or splits when knocked. Together that makes it one of the most durable gemstones for everyday wear, rings included.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Ultrasonic and steam cleaners are usually fine for a faceted ruby, but skip them if the stone has fissures that reach the surface.
Wear and storage
Ruby is very hard, so it can scratch softer gemstones stored with it. Only diamond can scratch it, so keep it apart from diamonds and store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This ruby is heated, and the color from heating is stable. Ruby handles normal setting, re-tipping and polishing well. If the stone has fissures that reach the surface, keep it out of direct torch flame and acid pickle.
