A small oval pink ruby from Madagascar in a deep plum-purple, the darkest and coolest of the pink corundum range. Fine striation lines run across the face where the polish catches at an angle, and a bright magenta point flashes low on the left side, the one place the color opens up. A small dark speck sits near the center of the table.
Plum-toned corundum sits at the boundary where pink ruby shades toward purple sapphire, with the trade line drawn by hue rather than by any difference in the mineral. Heat is a standard, accepted treatment for ruby. Corundum's hardness of 9 makes it durable enough for daily wear, and at 0.29ct and 2.8-3x2.3mm this oval suits an accent position where a darker, moodier pink is wanted. Ruby is the July birthstone.
Natural Madagascar pink ruby, July birthstone, sold loose.

About ruby
Ruby is the red variety of the mineral corundum. At 9 on the Mohs scale it is second only to diamond, and it is also very tough with no cleavage, so it rarely chips or splits when knocked. Together that makes it one of the most durable gemstones for everyday wear, rings included.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Ultrasonic and steam cleaners are usually fine for a faceted ruby, but skip them if the stone has fissures that reach the surface.
Wear and storage
Ruby is very hard, so it can scratch softer gemstones stored with it. Only diamond can scratch it, so keep it apart from diamonds and store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This ruby is heated, and the color from heating is stable. Ruby handles normal setting, re-tipping and polishing well. If the stone has fissures that reach the surface, keep it out of direct torch flame and acid pickle.
