A pear-cut natural ruby from Madagascar, 0.17 carats, with a teardrop silhouette measuring 4.7x3.7mm. Heat treated, the warm pinkish-red color comes through the transparent body, and the pear outline gives it a clear directional character even at this small size. Clarity is SI, inclusions present but not dominating the appearance at normal viewing distance.
Madagascar is the leading source of commercially available natural rubies, and heat treatment is standard practice for the island's material. The pear cut suits pendant settings naturally - the pointed tip can be set pointing downward for a classic teardrop look, or used in earrings and fine accent positions. Natural ruby, loose gemstone, July birthstone.
Natural Madagascar ruby, heated teardrop, July birthstone - sold loose.

About ruby
Ruby is the red variety of the mineral corundum. At 9 on the Mohs scale it is second only to diamond, and it is also very tough with no cleavage, so it rarely chips or splits when knocked. Together that makes it one of the most durable gemstones for everyday wear, rings included.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Ultrasonic and steam cleaners are usually fine for a faceted ruby, but skip them if the stone has fissures that reach the surface.
Wear and storage
Ruby is very hard, so it can scratch softer gemstones stored with it. Only diamond can scratch it, so keep it apart from diamonds and store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This ruby is heated, and the color from heating is stable. Ruby handles normal setting, re-tipping and polishing well. If the stone has fissures that reach the surface, keep it out of direct torch flame and acid pickle.
