A small oval-cut ruby from Madagascar in a warm raspberry-pink, noticeably saturated for its size. The body is semi-translucent, and a bright magenta glint sits near the center of the table where the material is at its cleanest. Faint cloudy zones sit toward the lower half, and a tiny darker speck sits near the left shoulder. The color is deepest through the middle of the stone and lightens slightly toward the outer edge.
Madagascar supplies a large share of the world's small commercial ruby, and stones at this size are usually cut for color rather than for clean interiors. Heat is a standard, accepted treatment for ruby. Corundum's hardness of 9 makes it a durable choice even at accent size, and at 0.21ct and 4.3x3.4mm this oval works as a side stone, an accent in a cluster, or a small solitaire in a delicate setting. Ruby is the July birthstone.
Natural Madagascar ruby, heated oval, July birthstone, sold loose.

About ruby
Ruby is the red variety of the mineral corundum. At 9 on the Mohs scale it is second only to diamond, and it is also very tough with no cleavage, so it rarely chips or splits when knocked. Together that makes it one of the most durable gemstones for everyday wear, rings included.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Ultrasonic and steam cleaners are usually fine for a faceted ruby, but skip them if the stone has fissures that reach the surface.
Wear and storage
Ruby is very hard, so it can scratch softer gemstones stored with it. Only diamond can scratch it, so keep it apart from diamonds and store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This ruby is heated, and the color from heating is stable. Ruby handles normal setting, re-tipping and polishing well. If the stone has fissures that reach the surface, keep it out of direct torch flame and acid pickle.
