A pear-cut natural ruby from Madagascar, 0.22 carats, with a well-shaped teardrop silhouette measuring 4.3x3.4mm. Heat treated, the stone shows a warm pinkish-red color throughout the transparent body - the faceted crown returns light across the face, and the teardrop outline gives it a distinct shape identity even at this small size. Clarity is SI, inclusions present under magnification but not breaking up the face-up color.
Madagascar is the primary source of natural ruby at affordable price points, and heat treatment is standard trade practice for the island's material. Pear-cut rubies are a natural fit for pendant necklaces and drop earrings, and this size also works well as a side accent in a three-stone ring design. Natural ruby, loose gemstone, July birthstone.
Natural Madagascar ruby, heated teardrop, July birthstone - sold loose.

About ruby
Ruby is the red variety of the mineral corundum. At 9 on the Mohs scale it is second only to diamond, and it is also very tough with no cleavage, so it rarely chips or splits when knocked. Together that makes it one of the most durable gemstones for everyday wear, rings included.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Ultrasonic and steam cleaners are usually fine for a faceted ruby, but skip them if the stone has fissures that reach the surface.
Wear and storage
Ruby is very hard, so it can scratch softer gemstones stored with it. Only diamond can scratch it, so keep it apart from diamonds and store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This ruby is heated, and the color from heating is stable. Ruby handles normal setting, re-tipping and polishing well. If the stone has fissures that reach the surface, keep it out of direct torch flame and acid pickle.
