An oval-cut ruby from Madagascar in a deep pink-red, a shade cooler and heavier in tone than the brighter pinks of this size. The defining feature sits near the center of the table: a dark green-black crystal inclusion, clearly visible to the naked eye, running as a short vertical mark with a second smaller speck below it. Further green-black points sit near the upper left edge. The surrounding body is even and semi-translucent.
Green-black inclusions of this kind are common in Madagascar corundum and are usually spinel or a related mineral trapped during growth. Heat is a standard, accepted treatment for ruby. Corundum's hardness of 9 makes it durable enough for daily wear, and at 0.24ct and 4.4x3.4mm this oval works as a characterful accent stone for anyone who likes a visible natural marker. Ruby is the July birthstone.
Natural Madagascar ruby, heated oval, July birthstone, sold loose.

About ruby
Ruby is the red variety of the mineral corundum. At 9 on the Mohs scale it is second only to diamond, and it is also very tough with no cleavage, so it rarely chips or splits when knocked. Together that makes it one of the most durable gemstones for everyday wear, rings included.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Ultrasonic and steam cleaners are usually fine for a faceted ruby, but skip them if the stone has fissures that reach the surface.
Wear and storage
Ruby is very hard, so it can scratch softer gemstones stored with it. Only diamond can scratch it, so keep it apart from diamonds and store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This ruby is heated, and the color from heating is stable. Ruby handles normal setting, re-tipping and polishing well. If the stone has fissures that reach the surface, keep it out of direct torch flame and acid pickle.
