A pear-cut ruby from Madagascar in a deeper purplish-pink, richer and cooler in tone than the lighter stones of this size. The facet surfaces carry fine parallel striations from the cutting wheel, most visible across the upper left where the light catches the polish at an angle. Small green-black specks sit near the top edge, and the color deepens noticeably toward the lower half of the stone.
Madagascar ruby covers a broad tonal range, and stones toward the purple end of that range read as deeper and more saturated in wear. Heat is a standard, accepted treatment for ruby. Corundum's hardness of 9 makes it durable enough for daily wear, and at 0.27ct and 4.5x3.6mm this pear suits a drop pendant or a small accent where a deeper red-purple is wanted. Ruby is the July birthstone.
Natural Madagascar ruby, heated pear, July birthstone, sold loose.

About ruby
Ruby is the red variety of the mineral corundum. At 9 on the Mohs scale it is second only to diamond, and it is also very tough with no cleavage, so it rarely chips or splits when knocked. Together that makes it one of the most durable gemstones for everyday wear, rings included.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Ultrasonic and steam cleaners are usually fine for a faceted ruby, but skip them if the stone has fissures that reach the surface.
Wear and storage
Ruby is very hard, so it can scratch softer gemstones stored with it. Only diamond can scratch it, so keep it apart from diamonds and store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This ruby is heated, and the color from heating is stable. Ruby handles normal setting, re-tipping and polishing well. If the stone has fissures that reach the surface, keep it out of direct torch flame and acid pickle.
