A pear-cut natural ruby from Madagascar, 0.30 carats, with an elongated teardrop form measuring 5.3x3.5mm. Heat treated, the warm pinkish-red color of Malagasy ruby runs through the transparent body, and the longer length gives it a graceful shape under light. Clarity is SI, inclusions visible under magnification but the stone transparent and vivid face-up. The length-to-width ratio makes it well suited for hanging settings.
Madagascar is the world's most significant source of commercially traded natural ruby, and heat treatment is standard for almost all material from the island. About ruby
Ruby is the red variety of the mineral corundum. At 9 on the Mohs scale it is second only to diamond, and it is also very tough with no cleavage, so it rarely chips or splits when knocked. Together that makes it one of the most durable gemstones for everyday wear, rings included.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Ultrasonic and steam cleaners are usually fine for a faceted ruby, but skip them if the stone has fissures that reach the surface.
Wear and storage
Ruby is very hard, so it can scratch softer gemstones stored with it. Only diamond can scratch it, so keep it apart from diamonds and store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.

This ruby is heated, and the color from heating is stable. Ruby handles normal setting, re-tipping and polishing well. If the stone has fissures that reach the surface, keep it out of direct torch flame and acid pickle.
