An oval-cut ruby from Madagascar in a dark cherry-red, deeper and more concentrated than the lighter pinkish stones at this size. Whitish feathers run through the left half of the body, visible as soft veils against the red, and two bright magenta points flash from the lower center. A few small green-black specks sit along the left edge. The overall tone is rich and slightly inky.
Feathers of this kind are healed fractures formed during crystal growth, and they are a normal part of natural ruby at commercial clarity. Heat is a standard, accepted treatment for ruby. Corundum's hardness of 9 makes it durable enough for daily wear, and at 0.30ct and 4.2x3.2mm this oval suits a bezel or a small solitaire where a deep, dark red is the goal. Ruby is the July birthstone.
Natural Madagascar ruby, heated oval, July birthstone, sold loose.

About ruby
Ruby is the red variety of the mineral corundum. At 9 on the Mohs scale it is second only to diamond, and it is also very tough with no cleavage, so it rarely chips or splits when knocked. Together that makes it one of the most durable gemstones for everyday wear, rings included.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Ultrasonic and steam cleaners are usually fine for a faceted ruby, but skip them if the stone has fissures that reach the surface.
Wear and storage
Ruby is very hard, so it can scratch softer gemstones stored with it. Only diamond can scratch it, so keep it apart from diamonds and store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This ruby is heated, and the color from heating is stable. Ruby handles normal setting, re-tipping and polishing well. If the stone has fissures that reach the surface, keep it out of direct torch flame and acid pickle.
