An oval-cut natural ruby from Madagascar, 0.40 carats, measuring 5.1x3.8mm. Heat treated, the stone shows a warm pinkish-red color with good transparency - the slightly elongated oval outline at this weight gives it a larger visual footprint, and the faceting carries the color clearly across the face. Clarity is SI, with inclusions visible under a loupe but the stone transparent and presenting its warm red cleanly.
Madagascar is one of the world's most significant ruby-producing regions at accessible price points, and heat treatment is standard for most commercial material from the island. At 0.40ct and 5.1x3.8mm, this ruby works well as a solo stone in a small ring setting or as a more prominent accent in a multi-stone design. Natural ruby, loose gemstone, July birthstone.
Natural Madagascar ruby, heated oval, July birthstone - sold loose.

About ruby
Ruby is the red variety of the mineral corundum. At 9 on the Mohs scale it is second only to diamond, and it is also very tough with no cleavage, so it rarely chips or splits when knocked. Together that makes it one of the most durable gemstones for everyday wear, rings included.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Ultrasonic and steam cleaners are usually fine for a faceted ruby, but skip them if the stone has fissures that reach the surface.
Wear and storage
Ruby is very hard, so it can scratch softer gemstones stored with it. Only diamond can scratch it, so keep it apart from diamonds and store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This ruby is heated, and the color from heating is stable. Ruby handles normal setting, re-tipping and polishing well. If the stone has fissures that reach the surface, keep it out of direct torch flame and acid pickle.
