An oval-cut natural ruby from Madagascar, 0.40 carats, measuring 4.8x3.8mm. Untreated, the stone shows its natural color without heat enhancement - the red tends toward the cooler, more subdued tone typical of unheated Malagasy material, with the natural character of the color preserved as the stone came from the earth. Clarity is I3, with inclusions clearly visible within the stone, which is consistent with untreated ruby at accessible price points.
Most commercial ruby from Madagascar is heat treated as standard practice, making specifically unheated stones a distinct choice for buyers seeking natural, unenhanced color. At 0.40ct and 4.8x3.8mm, this oval has a good face area for its weight and is a practical size for setting or collecting as a loose untreated ruby. Natural ruby, July birthstone.
Natural Madagascar ruby, untreated, July birthstone - sold loose.

About ruby
Ruby is the red variety of the mineral corundum. At 9 on the Mohs scale it is second only to diamond, and it is also very tough with no cleavage, so it rarely chips or splits when knocked. Together that makes it one of the most durable gemstones for everyday wear, rings included.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Ultrasonic and steam cleaners are usually fine for a faceted ruby, but skip them if the stone has fissures that reach the surface.
Wear and storage
Ruby is very hard, so it can scratch softer gemstones stored with it. Only diamond can scratch it, so keep it apart from diamonds and store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This ruby is untreated. Ruby handles normal setting, re-tipping and polishing well. If the stone has fissures that reach the surface, keep it out of direct torch flame and acid pickle.
