A natural round cabochon of Madagascar ruby, weighing 0.49 carats and measuring 4.3mm in diameter. The compact 4.3mm dome shows a warm semi-transparent red body - the heat-treated Malagasy ruby color distributed evenly through the smooth polished surface. Just under half a carat in a neat, well-formed round outline.
Round cabochons are one of the most practical forms for ruby - the smooth dome surface sits naturally in bezel settings and displays the color without the complexity of a faceted cut. Madagascar is the backbone of global commercial ruby supply. At 4.3mm and 0.49ct, this cabochon is a useful accent and feature stone for ring, pendant, and earring settings.
Natural ruby cabochon, July birthstone - sold loose.

About ruby
Ruby is the red variety of the mineral corundum. At 9 on the Mohs scale it is second only to diamond, and it is also very tough with no cleavage, so it rarely chips or splits when knocked. Together that makes it one of the most durable gemstones for everyday wear, rings included.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft brush, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: cabochons usually contain fine inclusions or fissures that vibration and heat can open.
Wear and storage
Ruby is very hard, so it can scratch softer gemstones stored with it. Only diamond can scratch it, so keep it apart from diamonds and store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This ruby is heated, and the color from heating is stable. Ruby handles normal setting, re-tipping and polishing well. If the stone has fissures that reach the surface, keep it out of direct torch flame and acid pickle.
