A natural round cabochon of Madagascar ruby, weighing 0.51 carats and measuring 4.5mm in diameter. Just over half a carat in a smooth round dome - the warm semi-transparent red of heated Malagasy ruby shows evenly across the 4.5mm polished surface, with the color filling the dome cleanly under light. The round outline is symmetrical and even.

About ruby
Ruby is the red variety of the mineral corundum. At 9 on the Mohs scale it is second only to diamond, and it is also very tough with no cleavage, so it rarely chips or splits when knocked. Together that makes it one of the most durable gemstones for everyday wear, rings included.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft brush, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: cabochons usually contain fine inclusions or fissures that vibration and heat can open.
Wear and storage
Ruby is very hard, so it can scratch softer gemstones stored with it. Only diamond can scratch it, so keep it apart from diamonds and store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
