An oval-cut ruby from Madagascar in a deep, dark purplish-red with a beetroot cast. The material is heavily included and only faintly translucent, so the color sits as one dense, even mass across the whole face with little light passing through. A soft silky sheen covers the surface where the fine internal structure meets the polish, and faint growth banding runs diagonally across the crown. Small paler patches sit near the girdle on the upper left, and the overall character is solid and matte.
Madagascar produces ruby across a wide range of tone and transparency, from bright translucent material through to dense, dark stones like this one. Heat is a standard, accepted treatment for ruby. Corundum's hardness of 9 makes it practical for everyday wear, and at 0.55ct and 5.1x3.9mm this oval suits a bezel setting or a cluster where a deep, saturated red is the goal. Ruby is the July birthstone.

About ruby
Ruby is the red variety of the mineral corundum. At 9 on the Mohs scale it is second only to diamond, and it is also very tough with no cleavage, so it rarely chips or splits when knocked. Together that makes it one of the most durable gemstones for everyday wear, rings included.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Ultrasonic and steam cleaners are usually fine for a faceted ruby, but skip them if the stone has fissures that reach the surface.
Wear and storage
Ruby is very hard, so it can scratch softer gemstones stored with it. Only diamond can scratch it, so keep it apart from diamonds and store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.

This ruby is heated, and the color from heating is stable. Ruby handles normal setting, re-tipping and polishing well. If the stone has fissures that reach the surface, keep it out of direct torch flame and acid pickle.
