A natural round cabochon of Madagascar ruby, weighing 0.59 carats and measuring 4.5mm in diameter. The smooth rounded dome at 4.5mm shows a warm semi-transparent red body color - the heated Malagasy ruby tone spreads evenly through the polished surface, giving the stone a glowing red appearance under both natural and artificial light.
Madagascar ruby cabochons are among the most widely used natural ruby forms in commercial jewelry. Heat treatment is standard across Madagascar's ruby output, bringing out the best of the material's natural red character. At 0.59ct and 4.5mm, this round cabochon is well sized as a feature stone in a small ring, pendant, or earring setting.
Natural ruby cabochon, July birthstone - sold loose.

About ruby
Ruby is the red variety of the mineral corundum. At 9 on the Mohs scale it is second only to diamond, and it is also very tough with no cleavage, so it rarely chips or splits when knocked. Together that makes it one of the most durable gemstones for everyday wear, rings included.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft brush, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: cabochons usually contain fine inclusions or fissures that vibration and heat can open.
Wear and storage
Ruby is very hard, so it can scratch softer gemstones stored with it. Only diamond can scratch it, so keep it apart from diamonds and store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This ruby is heated, and the color from heating is stable. Ruby handles normal setting, re-tipping and polishing well. If the stone has fissures that reach the surface, keep it out of direct torch flame and acid pickle.
