An oval-cut natural ruby from Madagascar, 0.65 carats, measuring 5.7x4.8mm. Heat treated, this stone offers a larger face area than most single rubies at this price point - the warm pinkish-red color of Malagasy material spreads across the generous 5.7x4.8mm oval with good transparency, and the faceting returns the color well under direct and diffused light. Clarity is SI, inclusions visible under a loupe but the stone transparent and presenting with strong color face-up.
Madagascar produces a large share of the world's commercial natural ruby supply, and heat treatment is applied to most material from the island as standard practice. At 0.65ct and 5.7x4.8mm, this ruby has substantial visual presence as a center stone and suits most oval ring and pendant settings. Natural ruby, loose gemstone, July birthstone.

About ruby
Ruby is the red variety of the mineral corundum. At 9 on the Mohs scale it is second only to diamond, and it is also very tough with no cleavage, so it rarely chips or splits when knocked. Together that makes it one of the most durable gemstones for everyday wear, rings included.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Ultrasonic and steam cleaners are usually fine for a faceted ruby, but skip them if the stone has fissures that reach the surface.
Wear and storage
Ruby is very hard, so it can scratch softer gemstones stored with it. Only diamond can scratch it, so keep it apart from diamonds and store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This ruby is heated, and the color from heating is stable. Ruby handles normal setting, re-tipping and polishing well. If the stone has fissures that reach the surface, keep it out of direct torch flame and acid pickle.
