June is one of the few months with three official birthstones: pearl, moonstone and alexandrite. Pearl and moonstone have represented the month since the first standardized birthstone list of 1912, and alexandrite joined them in 1952. This collection brings together the two mineral gemstones of the month, moonstone and alexandrite.
Moonstone is a feldspar built from very thin, alternating mineral layers. Light entering the stone is scattered by these layers into a soft, floating glow called adularescence, which shows best in smooth cabochons. Most moonstone comes from Sri Lanka and India. It is a gentler stone, well suited to pendants and earrings, or rings worn with some care.
Alexandrite is the color change variety of chrysoberyl: green to bluish green in daylight, reddish to purplish under warm indoor light. It is hard and tough enough for everyday wear, and genuinely rare, so natural stones are usually small and the strength of the color change differs from stone to stone.
Every stone here is natural, photographed individually and listed with its exact weight, dimensions and treatment status.
