A set of five round cabochons with high, smoothly polished domes and a real range of tone between them. Three are a medium greyish brown, one is warmer and a little deeper, and one is a pale smoky champagne, light enough to read almost as soft grey. All five are transparent through the dome, and one of the darker stones holds a fine natural feather inside, normal in transparent quartz of this grade.
A cabochon is domed and polished rather than faceted, which shows the color as one continuous field instead of breaking it up. These are Brazilian and untreated. Five 9mm rounds leave plenty of options: a bracelet row, two earring pairs with a spare, or a matched pendant-and-earring set. With a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale, cabochons this size hold up well in bezel settings.

About smoky quartz
Smoky quartz is the brown to gray variety of quartz. At 7 on the Mohs scale with no cleavage, it is a durable stone for everyday wear.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft brush, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can crack it.
Wear and storage
Smoky quartz is hard enough for everyday wear, and it can scratch softer gemstones stored with it. Harder stones such as topaz, sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.

These stones are untreated. Smoky quartz should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath.
