Two large square cushions, 13.9mm across each, cut with a fine checkerboard crown that lays small diamond facets in even rows from edge to edge. The color is a deep greyish brown, cooler and smokier than honey-toned material, dropping close to charcoal near the girdle while the middle of each stone stays openly transparent. A scatter of small dark pinpoint inclusions sits near one edge of one stone. The two are well matched in tone and outline.
At close to 8ct apiece these are substantial stones, and the square cushion outline gives them a balanced, architectural look in a setting. Brazil produces smoky quartz in large clean crystals, which is why this size remains accessible, and the pair is untreated, the color entirely natural. With a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale quartz handles everyday wear well, though a protective setting is worth considering at this size. About smoky quartz
Smoky quartz is the brown to gray variety of quartz. At 7 on the Mohs scale with no cleavage, it is a durable stone for everyday wear.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. An ultrasonic cleaner is usually fine for a clean faceted smoky quartz, but skip steam: sudden heat can crack quartz or change its color.
Wear and storage
Smoky quartz is hard enough for everyday wear, and it can scratch softer gemstones stored with it. Harder stones such as topaz, sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.

These stones are untreated. Smoky quartz takes normal setting well, but keep it out of direct torch flame: sudden heat can crack it or change its color.
