A cushion-cut stone at the darkest end of the smoky quartz range, reading almost black in ordinary light, with the faintest warm brown showing only where the stone thins toward the edges. The checkerboard crown lays a fine grid of small diamond facets across the whole top, and the depth of tone gives the piece a graphic, near-monochrome character. The polish is clean and even, and the darkness of the color conceals the inclusions.
Very dark smoky quartz is often chosen where a black stone is wanted but with more life in it than opaque material offers, since the quartz still transmits light around the edges. This piece is from Brazil and untreated. At 11x8.9mm it works well as a ring center or pendant, and quartz's hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale suits it to regular wear. A good option for darker, more understated designs or for contrast against white metal.

About smoky quartz
Smoky quartz is the brown to gray variety of quartz. At 7 on the Mohs scale with no cleavage, it is a durable stone for everyday wear.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. An ultrasonic cleaner is usually fine for a clean faceted smoky quartz, but skip steam: sudden heat can crack quartz or change its color.
Wear and storage
Smoky quartz is hard enough for everyday wear, and it can scratch softer gemstones stored with it. Harder stones such as topaz, sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
