A compact square cushion with softly rounded corners and a checkerboard crown. The upper half of the stone is a deep cool brown, close to charcoal at its darkest, while the lower half opens into a glowing amber-orange. That split between a smoky top and a warm base is the most appealing thing about this piece, and the transparency of the material makes it easy to see. The inclusions present are minor.
A 10mm cushion is one of the most useful sizes in a loose stone, large enough to carry a ring on its own and still easy to place in a standard mount. The material is Brazilian and untreated, its color natural to the quartz. With a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale it is well suited to everyday jewelry, in a ring, a pendant, or a single dramatic earring.

About smoky quartz
Smoky quartz is the brown to gray variety of quartz. At 7 on the Mohs scale with no cleavage, it is a durable stone for everyday wear.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. An ultrasonic cleaner is usually fine for a clean faceted smoky quartz, but skip steam: sudden heat can crack quartz or change its color.
Wear and storage
Smoky quartz is hard enough for everyday wear, and it can scratch softer gemstones stored with it. Harder stones such as topaz, sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.

This smoky quartz is untreated. Smoky quartz takes normal setting well, but keep it out of direct torch flame: sudden heat can crack it or change its color.
