Pair of Natural Smoky Quartz 14.08ct Octagon Cut

A matched pair of octagon-cut smoky quartz, each an elongated rectangle with neatly clipped corners and a checkerboard crown of small diamond facets. The color is a warm mid-brown, transparent enough to read straight through, shading from pale tan along the clipped corners into deeper cocoa across the center. One stone is a shade cooler and greyer, the other a little warmer, though they sit together well as a pair. A few pinpoint inclusions are visible on close inspection.

Brazil supplies a large share of the world's smoky quartz, and the brown here is the stone's own color, formed by natural irradiation of the quartz in the ground rather than by anything added afterwards. Both stones are untreated. Quartz sits at 7 on the Mohs scale, durable enough for regular jewelry wear with ordinary care. The long octagon outline suits drop earrings, a pendant pair, or matched side stones flanking a larger center. Smoky quartz is commonly listed among the modern zodiac stones for Capricorn.
