A large oval in deep brick red, even in tone from edge to edge with only a slight lightening toward the lower end. At 15.9x12.5mm the stone has genuine size, and the wide table and long facets carry the color in broad panels rather than breaking it up. Fine internal clouding gives the red a soft, almost velvety texture rather than a glassy one, consistent with the SI grade, and a few small pinpoints sit near the center. Face up it reads as a solid, saturated red with a warm orange undertone where light catches the crown facets.
Madagascar produces spessartine across a wide tonal range, including this deeper red material that sits well away from the bright Fanta orange. The stone is untreated. At nearly 12ct it is a statement pendant stone, large enough to carry a piece on its own. As a garnet it also serves as a January birthstone.

About garnet
Garnet is a family of closely related minerals, including rhodolite, spessartine, grossular and tsavorite. At 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale with no cleavage, it is a good stone for everyday wear.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. An ultrasonic cleaner is usually fine for a clean faceted garnet, but skip steam: sudden temperature changes can crack it.
Wear and storage
Garnet is hard enough for everyday wear, and it can scratch softer gemstones stored with it. Harder stones such as topaz, sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.

This garnet is untreated. Garnet takes normal setting well, but keep it out of direct torch flame: sudden heat can crack it or change its color.
