An elongated oval charoite cabochon with a dramatic, almost pearlescent band of pale lilac-silver sweeping horizontally across the stone, bordered by darker violet-purple and near-black zones on either side. The fibrous, turbulent texture typical of charoite is especially pronounced here, with the silky sheen following the flow of the crystal fibers and catching a bright highlight along the lower band.
Charoite occurs in only one known deposit in the world, along the Chara River in Siberia, Russia, where it formed through the metamorphism of limestone by alkaline intrusions. The swirling patterns and silky sheen come from the mineral's interlocking fibrous crystal structure. Untreated and natural. At over 30mm long, this piece has strong visual presence and works well as a statement cabochon for a pendant or as a collector specimen showcasing charoite's most dramatic banding.
Natural charoite, Russia, sold loose.

About charoite
Charoite is a rare purple mineral known from a single area in Siberia, Russia, with swirling, silky fibers. At 5 to 6 on the Mohs scale it scratches more easily than most gems.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft brush, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: it is a fibrous stone that heat and vibration can crack.
Wear and storage
Below 7 on the Mohs scale, it can be scratched even by household dust, which contains quartz. It suits pendants, earrings and brooches better than rings worn every day. Store it on its own in a soft pouch, away from harder stones.
For your jeweler
This charoite is untreated. Charoite should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. A bezel or another protective setting suits it best.
