About iolite
Iolite is the gem variety of cordierite. It is 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale, but one distinct cleavage plane makes it sensitive to sharp knocks.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can start a crack along its cleavage.
Wear and storage
Take it off for sport, gardening or heavy work: a sharp knock can split it. Harder stones such as topaz, sapphire and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
