A square cushion with softly rounded corners, 8.3mm across, in a very pale lemon that warms towards champagne through the middle of the stone. The tone is lighter than the oval cut from the same material, and the interest comes from the contrast between the pale yellow at the edges and the quieter, faintly brownish-grey center visible through the table. A small dark point inclusion sits low in the stone, with a fine feather just right of center. The cushion outline gives it a slightly antique look.
Scapolite is cut far less often than its color range deserves, and a cushion with proper corners is more work than an oval. This one is untreated, and UV-reactive like the rest of the Tanzanian material. At 5.5 to 6 on the Mohs scale it suits a pendant or drop earrings. A useful stone for anyone building a collection of the less common faceted species.

About scapolite
Scapolite is 5.5 to 6 on the Mohs scale with distinct cleavage, so it suits pendants, earrings and collections better than rings.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can crack it.
Wear and storage
With a hardness below 7 it can be scratched even by quartz, which is found in household dust, and a knock can chip it. Wipe it gently and store it on its own in a soft pouch. It suits pendants and earrings better than an everyday ring.

This scapolite is untreated. Scapolite should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. A bezel or another protective setting suits it best.
