A single rough scapolite crystal from the grade 3 sorting, picked at random from the parcel photographed here. In daylight this material sits between pale champagne and smoky brown-grey, with one crystal in the group a clear straw-yellow banded with heavy striations and several others showing brown-tinged internal veiling behind glassy, deeply grooved outer faces. Pieces in this grade run from about 12 to 16mm, smaller than the grade 1 and grade 2 crystals. The UV response is where the material makes its case: at 365nm the crystals light up magenta and violet together, at 310nm the pink deepens and the violet pieces separate clearly from the magenta ones, and at 255nm the whole parcel settles into a weak, even red.

Grade 3 is the smallest sorting of this Tanzanian scapolite and the lowest priced, which makes it a straightforward way to get a fluorescent crystal onto the shelf without committing to a larger piece. The photographs show the same three-wavelength response across all the grades. Untreated, and 5.5 to 6 on the Mohs scale.
