About jade
Jade is the name for two different rocks, jadeite and nephrite. Both are made of tightly interlocked fibrous crystals, which makes jade one of the toughest of all gem materials, even though its hardness is only 6 to 7.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft brush, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and heat can open fine fractures in the stone.
Wear and storage
Put it on after perfume, lotion and hairspray, which leave a film that dulls the stone, and take it off for sport, cleaning or heavy work, when it is most likely to be knocked or to meet household chemicals. Jade is very tough and rarely chips or breaks, but at 6 to 7 it can be scratched by quartz, which is found in household dust. Wipe it after wear and store it on its own in a soft pouch.
