A large lepidolite oval cabochon from India, 24.7ct at 28.6x18.4mm. The stone shows a deep purple body color with mottled lighter lavender patches scattered across the surface. The texture is slightly crystalline-granular rather than smooth, giving the surface a natural, raw character. Small spots of contrasting green mineral are visible within the matrix. The opaque stone has a low-luster polish as documented in the product photos.

About lepidolite
Lepidolite is a lithium-rich mica, built from thin layers that split apart easily. At 2.5 to 4 on the Mohs scale it is soft, so it is best kept for display or gentle wear.
Cleaning
Wipe it with a soft cloth dampened in lukewarm water and dry it at once. Do not soak it or leave it in water. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: lepidolite is a mica made of thin layers that split apart easily.
Wear and storage
Take it off for sport, gardening or heavy work, where a knock is most likely to split it along its cleavage. Below 7 on the Mohs scale it can be scratched even by quartz in household dust, so store it on its own in a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This lepidolite is untreated. Lepidolite should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Ask for gentle pressure when setting, since a hard push can split it.
