Three rough scapolite crystals photographed together on a millimetre scale. The largest is a long, flat-sided prism roughly 26mm across, glass-clear along its length with fine parallel striations running the full face and a single tiny orange-brown speck near the upper edge. Beside it sits a triangular wedge with frosted, etched surfaces and a faint smoky cast, and a short blocky prism in pale straw with deeply grooved sides. In daylight the group reads near-colorless to pale straw, semi-transparent and understated. Under UV light all three behave as one: longwave (365nm) brings up a vivid violet to magenta-purple glow across every piece, and shortwave (255nm) gives the same three crystals a weak red glow.

Scapolite is a calcium-sodium aluminium silicate that forms in metamorphic rock, and the Tanzanian deposits are the source collectors know for strongly UV-active material. These three are untreated, and scapolite is 5.5 to 6 on the Mohs scale. A lot of three gives a useful side by side of how one species responds across three different crystal habits.
