A large cushion with a bold checkerboard crown, dark and dramatic in overall tone but far from uniform. Deep coffee brown dominates, and through the lower left of the stone runs a band of amber and copper where the color opens up considerably. The remainder holds a much deeper, near-black brown, giving the piece real depth and variation across its width. Natural inclusions are present, and the large flat facets are cleanly and evenly polished.
At 16.1x13.7mm and over 10ct this is a genuine statement stone, sized for a cocktail ring or a large pendant where the checkerboard pattern has room to be seen. Brazil produces smoky quartz in large clean crystals, which is why sizes like this remain affordable, and this stone is untreated. Quartz's hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale makes it practical to wear, though a bezel or otherwise protective setting is sensible at this scale.

About smoky quartz
Smoky quartz is the brown to gray variety of quartz. At 7 on the Mohs scale with no cleavage, it is a durable stone for everyday wear.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. An ultrasonic cleaner is usually fine for a clean faceted smoky quartz, but skip steam: sudden heat can crack quartz or change its color.
Wear and storage
Smoky quartz is hard enough for everyday wear, and it can scratch softer gemstones stored with it. Harder stones such as topaz, sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
