A pair of square cushions, 10mm each, cut with a checkerboard crown and matched closely in both color and outline. The tone is a cooler grey-brown, true smoke rather than honey, with darker near-black zones toward the corners and pockets of warm russet through the lower part of each stone. Small natural inclusions are present.
Square cushions are an easy shape to set and tend to read slightly larger than their measurements suggest, thanks to the broad flat crown. The stones are from Brazil and untreated. With a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale they suit stud or drop earrings, and their matched tone also makes them usable as a pair of side stones. Smoky quartz is commonly listed among the modern zodiac stones for Capricorn.

About smoky quartz
Smoky quartz is the brown to gray variety of quartz. At 7 on the Mohs scale with no cleavage, it is a durable stone for everyday wear.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. An ultrasonic cleaner is usually fine for a clean faceted smoky quartz, but skip steam: sudden heat can crack quartz or change its color.
Wear and storage
Smoky quartz is hard enough for everyday wear, and it can scratch softer gemstones stored with it. Harder stones such as topaz, sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.

These stones are untreated. Smoky quartz takes normal setting well, but keep it out of direct torch flame: sudden heat can crack it or change its color.
