A natural round cabochon of Madagascar ruby, weighing 0.64 carats and measuring 4.7mm in diameter. The slightly larger 4.7mm dome gives generous face coverage for the weight, and the smooth polished surface distributes the warm semi-transparent red of heated Malagasy ruby evenly across the rounded face. A well-proportioned cabochon with good visual presence.
Madagascar accounts for a major share of global commercial ruby supply, and heat treatment is standard for most material from the island. A 4.7mm round ruby cabochon at 0.64ct is a versatile size that works well as the main stone in a small to mid-size ring or as the focal point of a pendant or earring setting.
Natural ruby cabochon, July birthstone - sold loose.

About ruby
Ruby is the red variety of the mineral corundum. At 9 on the Mohs scale it is second only to diamond, and it is also very tough with no cleavage, so it rarely chips or splits when knocked. Together that makes it one of the most durable gemstones for everyday wear, rings included.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft brush, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: cabochons usually contain fine inclusions or fissures that vibration and heat can open.
Wear and storage
Ruby is very hard, so it can scratch softer gemstones stored with it. Only diamond can scratch it, so keep it apart from diamonds and store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This ruby is heated, and the color from heating is stable. Ruby handles normal setting, re-tipping and polishing well. If the stone has fissures that reach the surface, keep it out of direct torch flame and acid pickle.
