A large round checkerboard cut, 15.1mm across, in a brown so deep it reads as solid black in normal light, with no warm color coming through the face. The dense checkerboard grid of small diamond facets covers the whole crown, and the piece has the character of a polished black stone rather than a typical warm brown quartz. The polish is clean and even, and the depth of color conceals the inclusions.
At 15.1mm and over 11ct this is a bold center stone, an alternative to black onyx where a faceted surface is preferred over a smooth polished dome. It comes from Brazil and is untreated, its near-black color the natural extreme of the smoky quartz range. A hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale suits it for rings and pendants with ordinary care.

About smoky quartz
Smoky quartz is the brown to gray variety of quartz. At 7 on the Mohs scale with no cleavage, it is a durable stone for everyday wear.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. An ultrasonic cleaner is usually fine for a clean faceted smoky quartz, but skip steam: sudden heat can crack quartz or change its color.
Wear and storage
Smoky quartz is hard enough for everyday wear, and it can scratch softer gemstones stored with it. Harder stones such as topaz, sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.

This smoky quartz is untreated. Smoky quartz takes normal setting well, but keep it out of direct torch flame: sudden heat can crack it or change its color.
