A round checkerboard-cut stone in a very deep brown, dark enough to read as near-black across most of its face, with a warm mahogany red opening up through the lower left. The checkerboard crown covers the top in a dense grid of small diamond facets, and the material stays transparent despite the depth of tone. Natural inclusions are small, and fine polish lines are visible on a few facets on close inspection, normal on a broad checkerboard crown.
Dark round smoky quartz is a common choice where a black-looking stone is wanted that still transmits color, and at 11.9mm this one has enough width to let the mahogany undertone show. From Brazil, and untreated. Quartz's hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale makes it well suited to a statement ring or a large pendant in daily use.

About smoky quartz
Smoky quartz is the brown to gray variety of quartz. At 7 on the Mohs scale with no cleavage, it is a durable stone for everyday wear.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. An ultrasonic cleaner is usually fine for a clean faceted smoky quartz, but skip steam: sudden heat can crack quartz or change its color.
Wear and storage
Smoky quartz is hard enough for everyday wear, and it can scratch softer gemstones stored with it. Harder stones such as topaz, sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
